Updates from Sierra Leone

One of the biggest problems in Sierra Leone at the moment is the synthetic narcotic drug known as “Kush.” Across the country – and especially in the larger cities – tens of thousands of very young people are deeply addicted to this devastating substance. Among others, this has led the country’s president, Julius Maada Bio, to declare the fight against Kush a “national emergency situation.”

We have personally visited many of the areas in the capital where Kush is most widespread, and the scenes are deeply disturbing. Very young people – especially young men – can be seen sitting, lying down, or wandering around in a trance-like state. Many suffer from large, oozing, infected wounds, and every day bodies are carried out of the various Kush areas. It is understandable that many young people in Sierra Leone are tempted by the escape from a very hard life in this poor country. But when they begin their addiction, they do not realize that they are fleeing straight into hell.

The situation surrounding Kush is truly serious. Over the past two years, our partners and we have visited most of the Kush-affected areas in the capital, Freetown, speaking with and providing guidance to local residents. We have gained a clear understanding of which age groups are most affected by Kush and in what numbers. In addition, we have conducted extensive awareness campaigns and sent nurses into many of these areas to clean and treat infected wounds. Last but not least, we have launched a program that helps specific individuals – especially children and teenagers – towards a life free from Kush.
